Pop down and say hi!
If you’re looking to get your first tattoo or maybe finding inspiration for a new design then the key is to find the right artist for the job. So many people will find a local Tattoo Artist and stick with them through thick and thin, however it’s important to note that most artists have an area of speciality.
So many times we get requests of artwork that doesn’t match our specialised area, for example an artist that specialises in Traditional tattooing won’t be experienced in photo realism, so as your tattoo will be with you for life its worth doing some research and finding the right artist for you.
Most people see an artist’s portfolio and don’t really examine what areas the artist excels at. Luckily an artist that has passion for their work will tell you if they would be happy to work with your ideas and if they aren’t they can direct you to someone that can. On your part this may involve extra travel or a longer wait but a tattoo removal is painful, longwinded and extra expensive, so why not make some effort to get it right from the get go!
Tattooing now has such a diverse culture with so many different artists and clients looking to display individual artwork then it’s important to match the right client to the right artist. There are no loyalty points for sticking with your local artist unless you want to just be tattooed in the style they specialise in. Shop about and if you do have a close relationship with your artist they will admire different artists and their styles.
Gone now are the days when we walk into a shop and pick some flash from a A3 poster, tattoos have evolved so much that clients can have a custom piece of artwork that matches their individual style, and there are artists out there ready and waiting to give you a tattoo you can really love. Think about it this way, you wouldn’t go to a Chinese restaurant and ask them for a steak? and if they agreed do you really think it would be as good a steak from a grill restaurant, no? Then why would you be so flippant about asking an artist to tattoo something they don’t do.
Here are a few tips:
1) Have a clear idea of what style of tattoo you want, if you are not sure then don’t do it.
2) Gain some knowledge in the style you are looking for.
3) Find an artist who matches your criteria.
4) Talk to the artist, if they are passionate about their art then they will spend time discussing your ideas.
5) Don’t be offended if you get turned down or directed somewhere else, after all most artists are particular about what they tattoo and want their art to be admired by everyone who sees it on you.
